Tulsa, Okla.-based convenience store company Quiktrip opened its latest Generation 3 prototype store, which puts a great emphasis on fresh perishables, in Wichita, Kansas Jan. 12.
This new version of Quiktrip’s c-store includes a bakery and more freshly prepared items. “The standard Quiktrip stores have all been self-serve. What we’ve been doing with the Generation 3 models is setting up a bakery and an area for hot and cold drinks made for you by our staff,” Mike Thornbrugh, spokesperson for Quiktrip told Perishables Buyer. “We have always had a focus on keeping things fresh and the Generation 3 stores allow us to stock more freshly made items than in our standard stores.
“We tried the first Generation 3 store two years ago in Tulsa and it achieved the goals we had in place for it,” he says. “The stores are significantly larger as well. The average Quiktrip is 4,300 square feet and all our Generation 3 prototypes have been 5,700 square feet.”
The extra space allows for larger kitchens, more packaged liquor and a separate area for vendors at the back of the store.
